With a population of roughly 25 people, Durham is a tiny blip right along the Oklahoma/Texas border. This unincorporated community in the heart of the United States became a surprise destination for our vehicle during a mid-May storm chasing trip, and one that ultimately became a highlight of the entire season.

Chase busts are hard, especially during days that involve patience and letting tornadoes go while hoping for a greater experience beyond the forecast. For May 17, 2025, this was exactly that experience. Our crew held ground and left behind a tornadic producing storm in the hopes of more atmospheric chaos further west. Unfortunately, our hopes were left unanswered, but not without a consolation prize that ultimately, was more rewarding than the sight of a tornado.

Accepting our defeat of a chase, we decided to roam the terrain for a photogenic scene at sunset. As we approached the town of Durham, the light evolved and proud oranges and yellows blistered the retreating clouds off in the distance. Our time was now, and mercifully, a field of hay bales and buttes left the perfect  opportunity for us to set up our cameras, and for one of us to even fly our drone. The day was not lost.

As we shot and flew, we heard the faint murmur of an ATV approaching. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a man named Jack, who was simply fascinated by the far-away sight and sounds of our drone.

Jack could not have been more kind. From sharing life stories of cattle farming and travel across the plains to offering us dinner, Jack left no kindness unseen for the next fifteen minutes. We were not just acknowledged, but we were welcomed by this tiny town in rural Oklahoma.

DURHAM'S LIGHT represents our experience on this day. Accompanied with presets for both chaotic and subtle light, brush effects for distant scenes and memorable moments, Durham's Light pays homage to our encounter with Jack and the brief time we spent in Durham.
